Things We Learned About Hawaii From Hawaii Five-0, Episode 213, “Ka Ho’oponopono”
January 3rd, 2012 by officer808All I want for Christmas is a new episode
Winter seemed longer and colder with two straight Hawaii Five-0 rebroadcasts the past couple of weeks. Well ok, it was longer and colder for the rest of you since the temperatures hung in the 60-70 degree range here in Honolulu over Christmas. I don’t mean to rub it in, but it’s good to live in paradise.
Was the wait worth it? Read on and find out.

Lost in the story
The chatter on twitter was mixed on the episode. Some thought it was brilliant, while others got lost in the storyline of a murdered teen, sex tapes, blackmail, insurance fraud, unions, mobsters and hitmen. As one who dabbles in writing, I give credit to story writer Stephanie Sengupta who I thought managed to construct a procedural that only gave you a little bit of information with every step in the case, and the final crime wasn’t truly revealed until the very end. That’s exactly the kind of procedural that I want to watch, one that keeps me guessing and with no obvious finger pointing right off the bat. The story’s subplot of Joe getting man handled by the Yakuza fit perfectly into the whole episode. The episode also took on some pretty touchy issue: a murdered child (albeit a teen), privacy violations in the internet age, and sexual relations between students and teachers.

But as a viewer, I can see also how if one stopped watching for a split second, say, to tweet something witty, you can miss a critical step in the investigation that will leave one wondering how they arrived at that point.
We got our first “Book ‘em Danno” for the new year, but I think Lori had the best lines in her investigation at Ala Moana Academy, responding to Danno’s “Where’d you get that?” with “From the trunk!” And I loved the exasperated, “Oh my, God, really? Are you serious?” as the teen blackmailer tried to dash off. Loved the scare scene with McG going rogue-ish and black bagging the tainted juror. Is that police brutality? Nah, I call it entertainment. Go Five-0!

Speaking of LOST

Jin Ho speaks!
Terry O’Quinn (John Locke in “Lost”) played punching bag for the Yakuza, and one of my favorite characters from Lost, Bernard the dentist (Sam Anderson) had a run in with rebar.
Everyone is getting mad at Joe
After the opening credits, we see Jin pcking up John Locke at the airport who had just came off of Hawaiian Air flight 815 Joe’s troubles start with Chin grilling him about his second trip to Japan. Chin’s mad at Joe because the Yakuza plays bumper cars with Chin’s new truck on the way back to Five-0. Adam Yoshimuri is mad at Joe cause he thinks Joe killed his father. Steve is mad at Joe because he ain’t spilling anything about Shellbourne. Hell, I think Joe is even mad at Joe- snapping back at Steve that he’s trying to prevent more people from dying.
How much longer can the fans hold on, cause even some fans are getting mad at Joe. I’ve seen a lot of people on twitter complaining about being strung out too long about the Joe storyline, and thankfully, the story looks like it’s coming to a head. Joe finally fesses up that he faked Hiro’s death and moved him to Japan (something which we predicted, yay!), and show runner Peter Lenkov promised the big reveal of Shellbourne in the next episode. But Joe’s right about Steve starting a war with the Yakuza after shooting up Adam’s luxury house. If Joe’s helping Hiro without Adam’s knowledge, Adam’s gunning for the both of them now.

"Sorry, I think I may have overdone it with the hand lotion this morning," Steve said. "Not at all, they're so soft. What do you use?" the lawyer asked.
And now, Things We Learned About Hawaii From Hawaii Five-0, Episode 213, “Ka Ho’oponopono”
1) My good twitter buddy @bakabreath tweeted that as good as Ala Moana Academy is, he went to Pearlridge High, but failed, so ended up at Windward Mall Charter School.
2) @wilburwong pointed out rookie Yakuza (Hawaiian Chapter) mistake: “Why would you take someone hostage back to your own house?!”
Did you notice…?
Twitter cuz @ileimohala noticed that Chin played with his wedding band in the final magic table scene. Everyone together now, “Awwww…how sweet.”
The opening band playing Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition” on the beach is Cradle 2 Grave. They pretty much killed that scene!
I am so getting a cell phone interceptor. Yes, they do exist.
Ala Moana Academy was the fictitious school in the episode, filmed at McKinley High School. McKinley alumnus @___instantk told me that only seniors were allowed in the “oval”, where President McKinley’s statue stands and where Karen the naughty teen in red hot pants was being questioned.
Steve tells the construction worker, “Shoots” in parting. It’s a pdigin “bye”, usually followed by “K den” (ok, then).
Braddah: “Shoots, k den.”
Translation: “Allrightee then, ta-ta!”
Since the actual State courthouse is used as the Five-0 headquarters, Honolulu’s main library with classic early 20th century Hawaiian architecture was used as the exterior shot for the courthouse in Five-0 world.
Update: The age of consent is sixteen in Hawaii. However in Hawaii, a 14 your old can consent to relations with someone who can be no older than 19. And now you know.

Another great review Officer, just as always.
I’m not quite sure what I think about this episode to tell the truth. I really liked the plot, because the conclusion really came out of left field for me, that was something I didn’t guess. It’s always nice NOT to know the why and who after five minutes. So kudos again to the writer, very nice work.
But I’m really kind of fessed up with the whole Shelburne thing, yeah it’s going on for too long for my taste now. I’m just as angry as Steve is, I guess that is what P. Lenkov wants, so mission accomplished. I think Steve said it all, he was tortured for that, tortured! For Christ sake give us some answers now! Joe come on, stop stalling and tell him already. He really deserves to know. And so do we, we are so patient and following Five-0′s every move, just as we’re supposed to. So stop stalling and TALK.
What I’m saying is I’m worried that I will be deeply disappointed with the reason why he kept it a secret. I really can’t come up with a good reason anymore why not to tell Steve. I’m sorry that really has me worrying, that they are building the suspense and it will be not worth the reason. You know what I’m saying?
Loved, totally loved Ninja-Steve. But I always do, he should come out more often.
Danny doesn’t know what’s in his trunk? Hilarious. Oh Steve what kind of surprises did you put in there?
Missed the cargument or any kind of banter between Steve and Danny for that matter.
And please can someone feet McGarrett? He really needs to put on some weight, he’s not looking good.
What the heck took Danny so long to come to his friends aid when Steve tried to save that guy hanging off that construction site? Come on Danny you can do better than that. Save a life first, than read someone his rights, he even could have let him get away, it’s not like he was armed. I mean really Danny! You can arrest him later, help your friend saving that guy. Poor Steve not being able to pull him up, but I liked it that he couldn’t, because in reality that wouldn’t be possible.
All in all probably not the best episode but still very good entertainment and a good show.
Danny’s got grenades and cell phone interceptors in his car. What else is in there? RPGs????
I think the Shelbourne mystery is ripe, and it’s definitely time for Joe to come clean!
I don’t think anyone would be in a rush to save a crooked lawyer…
For whatever reason, neither of them appeared to have handcuffs, so Danny had to cover the other suspect, while Steve tried to rescue the old guy.
Danny is putting the handcuffs on the suspect right after the lawyer fell down. You can clearly see it in a few frames. Even if he didn’t have any, he should have helped save a life. The suspect wouldn’t have gone far.
Yeah, I noticed that it Danny didn’t come to Steve aid. But Steve also didn’t call to Danny to help him either. They also need to get Steve and Danny back together more often, Alex and Scott has great chemistry and it shows when they are together. Maybe they need to stick to a certain group of writers instead bouncing from writer to writer. It was a good episode, you think, yeah the boy friend, but no it wasn’t. I really liked when Steve said to the boy friend, “You call me, SIR! Poor rich boy got scared by Super Seal. When Danny and Lori were talking did she say she hated school? Now she told Steve she like PE at school, but that may have been college that she liked.
Consistency in writing is always tough with a huge group. You may be on to something though.
Of all the pairings, I gotta say I LOVED the Kono/Lori pair. But that’s just a guy’s point of view.
Also Danny said in season 1 that he originally tore his ACL playing baseball in school and in this episode he said that he wasn’t a Jock.
I don’t really know where I’m coming from with this episode. I liked it, of course, but then, I like every single Five-0 episode I see! I suppose I was hoping for more from the first show of the New Year. I guess, in that regard, I was a bit disappointed but not enough to say I didn’t like the episode, I found it very very enjoyable. As usual there was the crime of the week and the ongoing McGarrett story arc but, to me, neither the case nor the arc were completely satisfying stories or outcomes.
The crime of the week left me bewildered. Not because it was convoluted and took many twists and turns before it was resolved. I’m used to that, they do that every week. I too liked that I didn’t know the who or what right away. It’s always fun to try to figure stuff out. But, I just didn’t understand the purpose of it. I mean, I’ve been on jury duty a number of times (as a matter of fact, I go again later this month, damn it all!) and I’ve seen jurors dismissed for tons of different reasons. Once a guy got dismissed just because he caught a cold on our 3rd day and couldn’t stop sneezing and disrupting the courtroom. Another time someone’s child got sick and she had to leave. I really don’t see that someone needs to resort to murdering an innocent 17 year old girl just to get her father off a jury. Seemed like over-kill to me!
pun intended!
Then there is Steve’s story arc! I’m not really what you would call frustrated by the developments or lack of developments in this storyline. I LIKE mysteries and trying to figure them out and I did stick with all 6 years of LOST after all. I didn’t love every minute of it and wanted answers just like everyone else but I was willing to ride it out. I feel the same way with this too! I just hope Shelbourne lives up to all the hype and intrigue and that all the torture and deaths attributed to this mystery are not in vain.
I will say that I am drawing close to the line with my patience with Joe White. I still think that he is basically a good guy but he is taking his promise to John that he would protect Steve to the extreme. He needs to stop lying and hiding the truth because he is only making things worse for himself and, ultimately, for Steve. When Steve gets restless he gets impatient and when he gets impatient he gets stupid and reckless which only puts him and his team in more danger. Steve is right. He needs answers and he needs them NOW!!
Steve is no longer the 16 years old boy sent away by his daddy who needs protection. No one should know this better than Joe. He needs to let go of the promise he made to John and start to treat Steve as an equal, not as a subordinate. As they both said, they are no longer in the service and Joe is no longer Steve’s CO. It’s time Joe stopped acting like he is. I’m leaning toward believing that Joe helped Hiro fake his own death and Hiro is now safe somewhere in Japan. Whatever Hiro is afraid of, or whoever (MUST be WoFat, right?) it’s enough for him to let his own son believe he is dead.
It seems this is all leading up to 2×14 and the flashback to when Steve was a kid. We ARE supposed to find out who Shelbourne is in that episode and I think that maybe it will be the last show in which we see Joe unless he comes back later in the year. I just hope they don’t kill him off. No matter what, he is still an important person in Steve’s life and it would just be so horrendous for Steve to lose someone else he cares about.
I think it’s possible that the faking of Hiro’s death may be a clue to the faking of Mrs. McG’s death as well. Adam has no idea his father is alive…Steve has no idea his mother is alive. If that’s the case it kind of fits together in a really sick sort of way. Who knows? Maybe Steve and Adam will be kindred spirits. Well, maybe not!
My favorites (no specific order – just rambling as usual):
Ian Anthony Dale absolutely MUST stay with this show as long as possible. He is electric on the screen not to mention he’s totally hot as hell! And, like I’ve said before, the only thing this show totally lacks is enough hot guys!!! Speaking of which, wasn’t it wonderful to see Charlie Fong again? Always a joy when he’s on my screen.
I may be losing patience with Joe White but I am not with Terry O’Quinn. He and Alex are phenomenal together on screen. Every emotion between them is palpable. I don’t see how Terry can stay on the show long term but it has been a joy to watch him interact with the entire team. What a great addition to the show he has been!
It was great to finally hear Steve talk about what happened in Korea. The fact that he is, finally, incensed and frustrated enough with Joe to let his vulnerability show, is huge! It’s about time he said something about Korea. Besides a little scar on this cheek in one episode it was as if it had never happened. What he said to Joe IS a big deal. Yes, Joe, Steve DESERVES answers about Shelbourne after what he went through in Korea and Jenna DIED because of it.
When Joe said “People HAVE already died son. I’m trying to make it stop!” I was soooo sure he was going to say “I’m trying to make sure you’re not next”.
The band Cradle 2 Grave which opened the show ROCK!!! Mahalo to Officer Bob for the heads up on this band of local kids! It’s a shame they don’t have a CD yet…they really NEED to work on that because they are awesome!
Danny gets to drive his own car a lot in this episode but isn’t it curious that he never seems to know what is in his own car. Whether it’s Steve pulling a hand grenade out of the glove compartment or Lori a cell phone interceptor from the trunk, you’d think Danny would know what is in his car. Like Lori said “how did you NOT know it was in there?”
Speaking of Lori….she and Kono ROCK together! Talk about girl power. These two were fantastic together. Kid takes off running…Lori: Oh my God..really? Is he serious? ROFL
Both of Lori’s parents liked her high school boyfriend. Steve: Why, was he a eunuch? ROFL again!
I love Danny….as usual:
“Good news…you’re alive. Bad news..you’re under arrest!”
Sees body of dead girl: “I hate this job”
Schoolmaster sleeping with student: “Let me hit him just once, please”
Oh…and the headmaster of the school wouldn’t let Danny and Lori talk to Karen without calling her father because she’s 17 and underage but for sex, the age of consent in Hawaii is SIXTEEN?!?!?!? Wow….just…..wow!
We had both a Moonlight and a LOST sighting in this episode. Christopher Cousins who played the headmaster was also Kent Morrow in the Moonlight episode “Fated to Pretend” and, of course, Sam Anderson played Bernard, Rose’s husband on LOST! Always great to see reunions from our favorite shows!
So, there you go. While not one of my favorites it was an enjoyable episode which left us with questions we hoped we’d get answers to. But, there is always the next episode to look forward to and hopefully we’ll get at least a few answers as reward for our patience. Or we may have to band together and tie Joe to a chair ourselves and beat the truth out of him!
“Book ‘us Danno”
I loved this episode. It was interesting to see the actor who played in Moonlight with Alex show up in Hawaii Five-0. There have been several other “Moonlight” actors on Hawaii Five-0 — Josh, Tierney Taylor and several others. I love being kept in the dark for a while. Hoping the next new episode will give us the answers we have been waiting for. Keep up the awesome work everyone at Hawaii Five-0. Happy New Year, too.
Great recap! I love your analysis on Shellbourne and the possible tie with Steve’s mom and faking her death…intriguing…
The police brutality is getting old. Used to be Danny would object even if he could never get Steve to stop. I miss those days.
Danny has consistently pulled out all stops if children are the victims, hasn’t he? In his defense I don’t think he was in on Steve’s plan.
If this was S1, Steve would have been dangling the bad juror over a 200 foot high rock cliff rising out of the ocean, instead of just a 5 foot high outcropping on a soft, sandy beach! Danny knew there wasn’t any danger to the juror!
I thought the procedural was unnecessarily complicated. Those kinds of twists and turns work better in Jeffery Deaver novels when they’ve got 400 pages and a lot more logical coherence to work with.
The Joe/Steve stuff still has me interested but I’m getting frustrated with all the dramatic yelling that doesn’t go anywhere. They’re doing a good job with what they’re given but the writers need to give more. Hopefully 2.14 will clear a lot of this up. I’m very excited for that episode.
I have had it with Lori. She is useless. Her profiling is so lame and obvious, I can’t believe she’s a Homeland Security professional. Lauren German is really wooden no matter what they give her, but at least her lines could contain some information! Her role seems closest to that of Jennifer Jareau on Criminal Minds and she falls so far short of AJ Cook it’s not even funny.
And yeah, I’m getting a little worried about Alex O’Loughlin. He needs to gain some weight.
Aloha Whalen, thanks for your input. You’ve clearly summed up a lot of the frustrations that I’ve been seeing in the fandom.
I think watching six years of Lost has given me the kind of patience needed to see a story arc play out over years or a single season, and not just in a few episodes. LOL
I agree Whalen Loris profiling is lame. Is easy to see she has no strong character as a profiler. If u can compare Kensi from NCIS you can see that Kensi has more character than her, you can see t in the face. Lori has no skills, she is bland, many things are missing of her character, she likes to show off is the thing I have noticed. The writers wrote badly her character. Is not what fans expected she will be. She likes to steal the show, and Kono does not do that. I hope she is not the future love date of Steve, no no no!! And my guess is she will stay for the remaining of the season, because she signed only for 12 episodes but those 12 already passed and she still in the show. I wonder why the writers did not keep the original storyline for Lori and the Governor and why they change it. I mean Lori is not doing what the Governor told her to do,to keep and eye on H50 to make sure they follow the rules this time unlike the time when Gov Jamieson was on that the team had freedom to do what they want when enforcing the law and the current Governor is not even requesting a report on the H50 team from Lori. So why even thre is a governor character, he is not adding anything to the show either so far. His storyline was also changed from the original script perhaps.
There is one thing about Danny or lets say Scott Caan, that I think it has to be fixed and I have noticed since 1st season. I dont know if any of you have noticed that, but I have. In an interview Scott says he hates guns, even if they are fake, he does not like to hold guns at all. Hav eyou noticed the way Scott holds the gun when playing Danny? He holds the gun with such a scare liek he has a bomb on his hand ready to explode and even in his face u can see it when he acts.
I mean Soott will have to work on overcoming that fear because it is translating to the show he has to be more credible when holding a gun, like Grace, Daniel and Alex.
LOL – I always thought that Danny is holding a gun like he couldn’t get rid of it fast enough. When he’s holding a gun it always seems like a foreign object to him, totally different to McGarrett. When he’s holding a gun it’s like the gun is part of him.
Never heard SC talking about guns but that explains a lot.
I like that though. You see Steve is a SEAL and is used to holding weapons. Danny is a cop and most cops rarely draw their guns. When they do it is a life or death situation and therefore he should look scared. TV makes us think that guns drawn is an everyday occurance. It is not and real cops will tell you that.
Yes leni you’re right about every point. He should look scared of the situation but not of his own gun. Quite frankly he should be very confident about the gun in his hand, it might be the only thing that will save his life in the next tricky situation. And besides Five-0 is in a firefight in every darn episode so by now he should be able to handle a gun. And him holding a gun looks rather awkward so Maria might be on to something. But whatever the case, Danny afraid of his gun or not I enjoy it either way.
Great review Officer 808!
While not my fave episode by far, it had its moments. Most of them involved Steve/Joe. I agree with Linda above in that I’m getting worn out by Joe, but that’s the writing. Terry O’Qinn is phenomenal and he has matched up well agains Alex this year and given him someone strong to play off of.
Adam Nushimuri is a wonderful addition to the cast. I’m interested to see what they do with this character. Another great match against McGarrett.
This episode I missed Danny. He was there, but not there..
When this show decides to take itself so seriously that it does without crazy/over the top Steve is when it’s time to watch a different show. That’s one of the reasons I love this show. I’m not looking for real life. I’m looking for entertainment. The Shield was real life…I hated it.
Aloha ESS, thanks always for your input!
You and I are totally on the same page. If one wants a pure criminal procedural, Law and Order is the show to watch. Five-0 is over the top at times with criminals, which brings the entertainment appeal to me.
The story line of this episode was too many things at once involving one sole murder that at the end even if it was resolved the motive of the murder was very lame. Not my fav episode though. I am like other fans, not very fan of Lori character. Still she does not add anything to the show, she has no chemistry, she is stale. She asks dumb questions that other members already know the answer. She was poorly introduced to the show, that is the writers fault. IF she had more strong character maybe she may be liked more but also if she did what she was set to do in the first place maybe her perforance could have been better. I mean she was placed in H50 to keep an eye on the H50 so they wont break rules and work within the new Governor rules, so far she has done nothing about it and also the Governor has not kept an eye on the team either. Lori never had report to the Governor about it. I guess the writers changed both Governor and Lori original storylines once the show was in motion.
I miss the bromance and the carguements, something so important in this show. Yesterdays episode of course had none of that, unlike the 1st season you could see bromance and carguements in all episodes. I wonder why the writers are decreasing that from this season.
The Joe/Steve/Shelburne story I like the suspense and the mistery but I dont like the answers Joe always give Steve taht he cant say, he cant talk, he does not give Steve straight answers and he is furious about that he does not come clean once and for all, but I guess that is part of the storyline of this particular story. I do believe Joe is protecting Steve and we will al find out why in the Shelburne episode. What I dont know if what will happen wth Joe once the secret is out? Will he come back to the show or not anymore? WIll the Shelburne episode be Terry O Quinn´s closure with H50? I know h e signed for 10 episodes, and teh Shelburne episode is the 10th so I wonder what will h appen with his character after taht, Will he be killed off, wil he be sent away and no return. Does anyone know what Peter Lenkov has said about Terry O Quinn character?
Aloha Maria! That’s a fair breakdown of Lori’s character. I do agree that there have been fewer bromantic moments this season, which I miss.
Good review as always Officer!
I’m really hoping the next episodes continues where this one left off. And I do mean that like; it picks up where Steve is still in the truck and Joe has just gotten out [:
i ran the gambit on this one – at first i was mad and frustrated with the lack of development on the shelburn plot. was getting the feeling that i was watching Lost again with more questions than answers. Ive since changed my mind – I think the suspense and frustration is what theyre aiming for as it keeps us talking and wondering. I am hoping for a big reveal next episode and my money is still on steves mom but as we all know the writing on this show is so good that rarely are we ever able to make a correct guess- I did get the Governor last year and got megga points from my Ohana for that – they all had to worship me for a week!! there were so many fun things in this episode and i found myself glues to it and it felt like a ten minute episode because it all went so fast. the lori- kono team up felt very natural and all i can say is ‘schwing’ two great tastes in one!! they need to pair up more oftne and even need a girl cargument!!! wouldnt hurt if they did a little surfing together once and a while because i for one am tired of being one of a small handful of male fans on twitter- the arm porn and thuds are getting a bit embarassing—lol need more female leads in various states of undress–lol. the danno -lori thing with the cell phone- priceless and lori rolling her eyes when the cyber kid ran was sooo funny. “was he a unich” and “sir-YOU call me sir” were bothe excellently delivered by my man AOL. The writing draws me to this show but the acting by Alex and co keep me here – they are top notch all the way! I hope the Joe White thing gets wrapped up- I love the charachter but i want to see the team back as a whole. Lori took an unfair beating from fans this season and I really think it was Joe White who broke up the chemistry. Not complaining mind you we need variety and change, but I thing when his visit is wrapped up we will see a more solid ohana here, including Lori. Steve and Danno arent the same when they are split up- the 2 actors play so well off of each other its masterful. Scott makes every one bring they’re game. Look at the performances of Lauren and Grace when they are paired with him. hes second only to Aol as far as screen presence. LOved your blog Officer. Cant wait for Shelburne to blow up-I think its gonna be EPIC!
sorry for all the type-o’s a little dyslexic and with ocd and add it type faster than my brain. im told all the hot guys have it—btw val great review
It is obvious that you are only seeing Lori as a sex object which is the main problem for the female viewers. That is exactly what we don’t like about her. She needs a real purpose, like Kono has. We love Kono because she holds her own and is written respectfully and is the real female McG. Lori is written solely as the eye candy and because of that will never feel like she is part of the family. The writers ruined whatever chance they had of bringing in another strong female character. Whatever they do now to fix it is too late. The damage has been done. It is sad, that the same people who brought us the great Kono, could not do it again with Lori. Surely a missed opportunity.
A week??!! I definitely do NOT remember groveling for a week – maybe a half hour? At the most? LOL!!
Wow my review and comments is a little different so here goes..
Short of repeating myself, this week’s episode was fantastic as all the other ones before in season 2 and just for a short recap in my mind I have to commend the brilliance of Peter Lenkov and his talented team of writers who without a doubt pay a great deal of attention to creating great crime plots week after week. How they keep all the stories as original as they have been doing amazes me. No crime is like the one before and each one is like a puzzle that has all the pieces in the box but we just have to fit them in the right place thanks to the wonderful cast to understand what the plot is all about but this week was quite exceptional.
It had all the elements of scandalous sex, blackmail, jury tampering, corruption, all brilliantly portrayed with added suspense applied to each one with a little backstory like sugar added with enough spice to want more of. No wonder I’m addicted to the show – its been deliciously fun so far and I’m not hungry for food but the mytery around Steve’s family secrets along with many more other mysteries yet to unfold just keeps me longing for more causing enough distraction away from the questions that have been circulating for months ever since we learnt something new was brewing in the wind – the dreaded word “Shelburne”.
We still don’t know after all this time who, what and why – all troubling questions that have no answers, no clues, and a lot more troubling doubt about “Joe” who’s a bigger mystery than I ever imagined him to be. What a complex character but a very interesting and intriguing one. I love Joe and though I never trusted Jenna, I still on some level trust Joe and I never thought for a minute that Hiro was dead or that he was murdered by Joe. It came as no surprise to me that the yakuza were not happy with Joe nor the mysterious death of their yakuza “mob” boss though its not such a stretch of the imagination to pin the death on Wofat who we think killed Koji, Hiro’s brother. Joe’s frequent trips to Japan doesn’t come as a surprise at all though I would love to know if this had anything to do with the “stuff” from the red toolbox.
What I find so interesting is that Hiro not only is alive but his death had to be faked and for Joe to go to all this trouble to help Hiro goes to show that there was a great deal more than just an answer that Shelburne is a person not a place, the stakes are much higher.
Joe’s insistence on wanting to stop the questions from spreading around Shelburne makes me truly want to know why? Also Joe does want to protect Steve and he’s doing what he needs to do to get the job done under very dangerous circumstances. The mere fact that he’s so willing to risk his life and to do anything to keep this mystery of Shelburne under deep cover means that we most likely will never know the answer either. The mere fact that he is willing to bear under the dangerous scrutiny of the yakuza’s boss’s son Adam, is frightening. I think Joe will reveal the truth to Steve but just “hope” the secret’s worth fighting for and that it will protect the right people.
It was really clever of the writers to have Steve, and Chin ask all the right questions for our “benefit” but still resulting with the same negative response frustrating all of us who want answers is a clear indication that the writers have something big brewing in store for all of us, but unfortunately they have to make two wonderful men suffer along with us a little longer before we complete the second part of the puzzle.
Well the writers have certainly gone out of their way to create a rift in the relationship between Steve and Joe and I would so hate to see Steve lose faith in the man who has been a father to him during his entire years of service and I want Joe to keep his promise to Steve’s dad without betraying or hurting Steve. Sometimes being a “hero” can pay a heavy price, just hope it won’t be a bad one.
I still have faith in the writers and I know that they can’t keep the mystery of “Shelburne” a secret without ruining the suspense which is “bubbling up to the surface” and we are midway into the season so we can be sure that whatever’s coming is going to be mindblowing, I’m sure of it. Right now I’m very intrigued by what the writers have in store for all of us. Can’t wait for what’s next.
I like your take on Shelbourne Val. I’ve been wondering if Joe’s trips to Japan could have anything to do with Makoto. I mean, Joe told Steve that he’d been tortured and was dead but did Steve ever actually see his body? At the time it seemed obvious that once Joe found the body that HPD and the ME would be called in but we never saw that. That would be procedure but what if Joe’s first trip to Japan was to get Makoto there. I mean, he was originally born there, maybe there are still people there where he can hide from WoFat. Maybe Hiro is not there too.
The best way to stop someone from killing it to make that person think his target is already dead. Joe is steadfastly determined to keep this secret. Makoto and Hiro have Shelbourne information and now they are both “dead”. Can that just be a coincidence?
maybe Hiro is “now” there too! Geez..fingers…keep up!
Val, you always have a way of making me see each episode in a positive light! Don’t ever stop with your “glass half full” outlook! I look forward to it each week!
OMG OB, You’re just FULL of information. Loved the shoots, I was a little confused when he said that – now I know! Of course not like that’s a NEW thing for me to be confused but I learn something every episode from you!
That was a classic line from Lori, she is such a smartypants. Hehehe. That is a cool tool. I was laughing that Danny has all these surprises in his car… Lori with the phone interceptor, Steve with grenades… Danny needs to pay better attention to what his friends are putting in the Cammy or quit hanging with the cool kids.
Lori also had a great line when she turns to Kono and sighs and says “OMG, really? Is he serious?” when the kid starts running. Obviously that kid had NO idea who he was messing with. Kono kicks more butt than Mean Joe Green did.
Also the other best line was Steve asking if Lori’s high school boyfriend was a eunuch.
I’ve heard all the complaining about Joe but I really think he’s holding on to something that is going to rock Steve’s world and he really is trying to protect him. You’re right. I think Joe is mad at Joe for letting it get this far but Steve is a determined man. He should know, he trained him… (possibly fathered him…) *whistles*
Come on people, give the poor guy a break. Of course there is just no pleasing some people and they’ll complain no matter what. They live for it.
Well… let’s not inform the 14 year olds or the 19 year olds about that consent thing… I wanted to punch that pervy teacher… ew! Kono and Lori needed to kick his butt too! Just sayin.
Thanks Officer Bob… You always make me smile.
Does anyone know or heard what will happen with Joe character after episode 2.14? I mean I rad that Terry O quinn signed for 10 episodes and the Shelburne episode it is his last. So I am wondering now if Joe going to be killed off in the Shelburne episode or he will return for more. If he is not goin got be killed off or sent away, so then what will happen to his character? I havent heard that Terry O Quinn has signed for more than 10 so my guess is that next episode will be his last.
Anyone knows anything?
according to his website he is done filming H50 for a while.
So will Joe be killed off then inthe next episode if he is done H50 for a while or he will have a stroyline where his character leaves but he may come back?
Thanks for the review, Ossifer, it’s great – but I’ve come to expect nothing less! Lots of good reviews and comments, too!
Not much more for me to add, as the holiday festivities have not completely subsided for me,(meaning, college kids are STILL home!), and I’ve only gotten to watch ep. 2.13 once, so far. There were definitely some good moments – Kono and Lori pairing up was fun, Danny not knowing what was in his trunk, and Steve dangling bad juror over a 5 ft high “cliff!” But, and I’m sorry if I sound like I’m complaining, but I’m definitely tired of Joe White and his “holier than thou,” “I’m just trying to spare you pain” attitude he exhibits around Steve. If you can’t tell Steve what you know about Shellbourne because it’s one of those strategic ops you can’t disclose (thanks Bert and Steph for giving me this idea – I’m borrowing it without asking!)then at least tell Steve that, because he can understand that kind of thing – even Danny understands that, since when he asks Steve stuff and Steve just gives him that cocky smirk, he knows it’s off limits.
I guess, like some others, I was expecting more pazzazz with this first episode of the New Year. I did not have the learning experience of watching six seasons of Lost to train me to be patient, so I’m all for getting Shellbourne out into the open and moving on. Fourteen episodes into a season seems plenty long enough to finish this particular part of the McGarrett story arc. I don’t want it to be over and done with for the season, just satisfy our lust for knowledge as to who/what Shellbourne is, and lets advance our story!
Besides, I want some “Danny” time! He can either rant, argue, take more surfing lessons, ask if Kamekono’s in a training bra, call Grace “monkey,” or ogle hot young girls in bikinis again! I don’t care what, I just want to see more of him! Is that too much to ask for, PTB? Okay, fine! I’ll slink back off to slurping my Dayquil to get through the rest of the day now…sorryyyyyyyyyyyyyyy…
I always have to say something but I love to comment and give my opinion though. I dont like Lori period is not beacuse she is a female is because she has no character or good performance on the show. The writers could have brought any other female actress that can ACT!! and we could have been happy but Lori character is not working. As an former FBI Agent she does not look to have a strong character, no personality, no chemistry with the team and her time takes us away our loved bromance and carguements at times. I miss those.
The Shelburne thing. Ok everyone is alreayd tired of Joe and his mouth shut that cant say anything about it to Steve and Steve is wearing his patience out, but I guess this is objective of the story to keep viewers in suspense for sometime until the mystery is finally revealed.
I have read so many versions of who may be Shelburne in many websites, thta now Im more confused as to who he or she really is. some name Makoto, some name Hiro, some name Steve dad, others Steve mother and I read also that Shelburne may not be either one of them but a female informant who was working on the Yakuza and have lots of information on them and Joe knows about it.
There are many things that we really dotn know that I dont know if the storyline n particular was filmed that way on purpose to keep viewers guessing through season 1 and part of season 2 because it was going to revealed later in the show.
1. Joe said he found Makoto dead when he arrived at his house. Really? Why Steve did not get inside the house to check if that was true? I guess because he trusted Joe he took his word by it and they are friends. Also if Makoto was dead why HPD was not involved in getting the body out of the house and have an autopsy on him? I guess Joe would have nto allow to do that otherwise a secret may be out too soon. I mean I dont like when in a episode the writers leave unfinished scenes, like in this case or perhaps it was filmed that way so people guess in future episodes if he was alive or not and now he may be Shelburne. Another thing before Makotos murder, In the 1st episode of the 2nd season he spoke to Steve about something something that was never aired and we never knew what Makoto told Steve about his father. We just heard that he says that everything what Senior did was to protect Steve and his family. Again unfinished scene.
2. Did Steve mom really die in that car explosion? We never knew, this is the strongest link that we all had that Shelburn may be Steve mom. I mean that was no direct homicide it was secondary homicide, because the target was the father never the mother and she just happened that day to take Senior car instead of hers perhaps.
3. Hiro may be hiding from Wo fat and like Joe said he helped him dissapear so Wo fat stop looking for him. I guess Hiro and Wo fat are no longer friends anymore, becuase in season 1 Wo fat was playing golf with Hiro so we all assume they were partners, perhpas now at this moment or something happen in the way that they stop being partners and is why Hiro is now running away from him.
4. Are there more items in the champ box that we havent seen in both seasons yet? Love to find out.
5. I still want to know the connection between Gov, Jamieson, Steve dad and Wo fat, according to the meeting that was recorded on the video, where the Shelburne word came out. I mean I like to see more digging on Gov Jamieson past links with Hiro and Wo fat, she is dead sure but it is a key to this whole story. Who really was Gov Jamieson before she was Hawaii governor? Could she be Shelburne? I know she was pronounced dead, and that Wo fat killed her but you know in how many cop shows even if the evidence says the person is dead by the coroner sometimes there are twists and turns on shows like this and the person turn out to be alive and maybe Wo fat and the gov made a deal that she was going to take the bullet to frame Steve for her murder but she will be alive.
6. Why Steve and Mary were separated from their parents and sent away when they were young? I know it was to protect them, but to protect them from whom?? Hiro or the Yakuzas back then? I dont think so. I guess there are more strange things on Steve dad past that we dont know.
7. Did Victor Hesse really killed Steve dad? I mean we heard a gunshot but we never saw a body. He may have been shot because he did not die in the car explosion that killed his wife, or he died years after perhaps and Joe knew but never told Steve. But as I recall Steve dad die becaue Victor thought Steve killed his brother in Korea so he revenged him on that, not because Wo fat or Hiro ordered the murder of the Senior that is what I remember from the pilot episode.
I end here but those are my thoughts I wanted to share.
Bones theory
January 5th
1.Postcards in the champbox are from Joe White to John McG.
2.Shelburne is a code used by Joe,John, and Mokoto when following up on crimes between Japan, and Hawaii.
3.Shelburne is Steve mother’s maiden name.
4.Joe and John made inquiry to WoFat,about Shelburne. 5.During Steve torturing WoFat asked “Take me to Shelburne”.
6.Hiro Noshimuri, and Mokoto are in Osaka, Japan. Hiro was the leader of the gangs that smuggled drugs, guns, and humans to Hawaii.
7.Many clues from Joe.His name is Stephen J. Is the J. for Joe or John McG.
8.Joe calls him son. John McG. called him Steve. Chin Ho found records in HPD, and told Steve about his birth and Shelburne. Theory..but you know what they say about…theories.
Also good theories Bones. Now I have other questions. When Wo fat was torturing Steve in Korea and he ask Steve, take me to Shelburne. At that point Wo fat assumed Steve already knew about Shelburne which it was not the case. Steve did not know anything. Why Wo fat ask Steve abotu Shelburne? I believe that Wo fat assumed Steve already knew that her mom was alive, in case Shelburne is Steve mom. But in the Kensy episode when Kensi explains to steve what was int he video, Steve dad asked Wo fat: ” I want to know about Shelburne” and then Wo fat replied back with a question and asked him Who told you about Shelburne? Then in the fight scene between Joe and Wo fat, Wo fat asked Joe, why is he asking questions about men that are no longer with them and right before the fight scene started, Wo fat tells this to Joe: Tell John Mcgarrett that his son will be along soon enough.
What can u make up of this dialogue betweem Joe and Wo fat on taht èpisode?
Maria great questions.
Kensi stated that everyone exchanged pleasantries than she read the word Shelburne from John, prior to him and others turning their backs, therefore she could no longer read the lips of anyone. John McG didn’t ask a question. Steve asked Joe if he knew what the word Shelburne means. Neither Kensi or Joe knew what it refered to. Joe found out it was a person name after he kidnapped Hiro. Joe ask WoFat prior to the fight “tell me about Shelburne” WoFat replied tell Steve he will be joining his father soon. WoFat had the look of shock on his face when Joe mention Shelburne.
When Steve was tortured WoFat stated that either Joe White or John McG. told him about Shelburne. Steve said neither Joe White or John McG. knew Shelburne. Steve look at WoFat and said “you don’t know who Shelburne is”. Steve smile, and spit on the floor. Joe White is Steve Father….All of this is theory.
