TV Fanatic gets scoop on Pearl Harbor episode and Grace Park’s return

December 13th, 2013 by

Executive producer Peter Lenkov and Co-Executive producer, Ken Solarz tell TV Fanatic how it was to craft tonight’s Pearl Harbor episode. Not only was the attack on Pearl Harbor re-created for the small screen but also the controversial use of internment camps for the Japanese that lived in Hawaii during that time.

Lenkov also teased about what to expect in the New Year: Grace Park’s return to set, Catherine’s backstory, the three episode arc with Danno’s parents (played by Melanie Griffith and Tom Berenger) and more bromance from McGarrett and Danno!

Excerpts from: Hawaii Five-0 Scoop: Pearl Harbor, Grace Park’s Return & More!
by Jim Halterman

Executive Peter Lenkov and Co-Executive Producer Ken Solarz wrote the episode and talked to me about it earlier this week.

Remembering Pearl Harbor

TV Fanatic: For being such a hardcore cop show in some ways, then I watch an episode like this and see that you guys are so sentimental over there.

Peter Lenkov: [laughs] Well, you know, we wear our hearts on our sleeves. It comes with age.

TVF: Tell me about the opening of the episode because it was quite epic. I felt like I was watching a movie!

PL: I think, like you said, for a high-octane show we’re very sentimental. I think what we wanted to do was really come out of the gate with a bang. We wanted to tell the story. We thought if we could recreate the moment of the attack of Pearl Harbor that would probably be our biggest stunt or action sequence to date.

Part of that was us being selfish as writers wanting to write something big, wanting to recreate Pearl Harbor for the small screen, and challenging our cast and our crew doing something we’ve never done before. Also, it’s in context with the story telling because it was a great way to get into the story and sort of ease the audience into the device of the story, which was going to be flashbacks.

TVF: Since you’ve been doing this show for several years now, have you found that Pearl harbor is still very present with many people that live there in Hawaii?

Ken Solarz: Absolutely. Case in point, when we were shooting there – we have a wonderful crew down there, everybody from actors to crew people – there was this reverential silence because we were actually on the spot where the attack took place. We were recreating that. When you go there, you feel the pull of history. You feel the weight of what happened there. I think that everyone in Hawaii does to some extent, especially if you’re there and you’re on hallowed ground recreating this attack. It’s really quite memorable.

PL: Just to go back, after four years of doing this show I’m always getting calls from people asking me where to stay, where to eat, and they always bring up when they’re going to Oahu making a trip to, making a pilgrimage to Pearl Harbor. I think it is still relevant. I think we’re real history buffs here, but I think everybody knows the importance of that place and we’re hoping they also learn something in our episode that you’re not going to learn when you go to Pearl Harbor.

TVF: Tell me about the research you guys did, because there were things I learned that I didn’t know.

KS: We did quite extensive research. Peter had this thought when he created the show, when he was immersing himself in all things Hawaii. Peter brought up the fact that there were internment camps there…that’s pretty fertile ground for us so we just started digging into it and there are a lot of survivors of those camps still around. You can find oral history, you can find documentation, there’s lots to read on it, but we thought that it would fit into our show because of what Hawaii’s been through specific to Hawaii. That’s what made it attractive to us.

TVF: Did you guys actually get some of the actual veterans there for that scene at Pearl Harbor? I kept thinking that a lot of the older faces we saw were probably real veterans.

PL: Yes. In fact, one of them is the father of one of our CBS executives. We put him in just really to honor these guys. That’s really what it is, I mean, we have a very close relationship with the military and every now and then when we see them we do one or two episodes that are really a valentine to the military and pay tribute to the military. This is just one of those episodes.

TVF: What’s coming in the New Year on the show?

PL: Well, we’re just starting to shoot a three-episode part for Melanie Griffith who plays Danny’s mother. Tom Berenger is going to play his father in the last episode, so we’re excited about that. Three really fun episodes for Scott and his mom to play around.

We have a great episode every year where really we cement the blood brother aspect or the bromance between McGarrett and Danny. Last year was them stuck on a raft and the year before was the bomb. We always do one of these episodes, we just do one of these episodes that put Danny and McGarrett together for most of the episode and put them in some kind of jeopardy to show that they are true blood brothers.

We’re getting to find out a little bit of Catherine’s back story, Grace is back in the picture full time starting in the New Year, Kono is back full-time. She’s back from searching for Adam. So it’s the family back together. Grover is going to be a bigger part of our family [Chi McBride was recently made a series regular], there’s still going to be that animosity, but they’re going to learn to love each other, these two guys. They both have a very similar experience and they’re going to bond over that. Then we’re going to get this big revelation from McGarrett. There’s going to be a lot of great character stuff and I actually think some of our better stories are coming up.

Up Next on Hawaii Five-0 “Ha’uoli Lā Ho’omaika’i” with sneak peak clip!

November 21st, 2013 by

Hawaii Five-0 is pulling out the stops with guest stars this week in what is sure to be a ratings coup! The Grand Dame of television comedy, Carol Burnett, appears this week as McGarrett’s Aunt Deb.  The lovely Aunt Deb raised Mary on the mainland at John’s request, after the murder-but-not-a-murder of Doris McGarrett.

If you have never experienced the side splitting comedy of The Carol Burnett Show, I highly recommend checking out clips on YouTube.

Below is an interview that Burnett did on the CBS daytime show, The Talk about her Hawaii Five-0 experience.

Watch carefully during Aunt Deb’s singing performance for Burnett’s signature ear tug.  She’s said that it’s her way of sending a little hello to her now deceased grandmother and daughter.

Based on the short preview clip released by CBS, I already know that this is a character I want to see again and again.

Up Next on Hawaii Five-0 “Akanahe” includes preview clip

November 13th, 2013 by

The rising tension between McGarrett and Grover is my favourite new feature of Hawaii Five-0 Season 4.  Their tumultuous relationship reminds me of the first few episodes of Season 1 before the McGarrett and Danno bromance blossomed. Remember when Danno punched McGarrett in the face after getting shot in the shoulder in the pilot?  Ah, the good old days.

Nick Jonas, of the  recently disbanded Jonas brothers, is the big name guest star of the week.  Jonas plays a computer hacker, but sadly, does not appear to cross paths with Hawaii Five-0 fans’ favourite in-house hacker, Toast (played by Martin Starr).

Up Next on Hawaii Five-0 – “A ia la aku”

October 16th, 2013 by

Looks like the theme for this week’s episode is relationships.

Autumn Reeser returns as Danny’s love interest Gabby. Will Danny finally say the “L” word to her? Based on the preview clip, we know that Danny does not have much good to say about marriage.

After last week’s episode, it was quite obvious that McGarrett is starting to have doubts about Cath working with her old flame, Billy. With both Michelle Borth (Cath) and Justin Bruening (Billy) in this episode, I suspect McGarrett will be feeling further insecurity. I kind of like this vulnerable side of him.

Interesting note – the actor that plays the best man in this episode, Raleigh Craighead, was also the stunt man for Robbie Amell who played Billy Keats in Season 3 Episode 4 “Popilikia”.

Lost fans will recognize the lovable Hurley (Jorge Garcia)  in Friday’s episode. Garcia’s appearance is the lastest in Lost alumni that have returned to Hawaii to guest star in Hawaii Five-0. TvFanatic’s Hawaii Five-0 Exclusive with Peter Lenkov (more Season 4 spoilers!)

October 4th, 2013 by

Tvfanatic.com had the chance to chat with executive producer, Peter Lenkov, during premiere week about what’s in store for the Five-0 team. Here some details about what to expect inSeason 4 for McGarrett and WoFat, McGarrett and Mama McG, Chin Ho and Kono. I am very excited to hear more about Carol Burnett’s appearance later this year!

(excerpts are from TVFanatic.com)

TV Fanatic: What are some of the major themes for Season Four? Will the Wo Fat business get resolved fairly soon?

Peter Lenkov: Well, it’s never going to be resolved. Not this season, but we do have some answers and I think some of the obvious answers that the fans have been asking. We definitely address that. We address that big question that I know is on everybody’s mind, ‘are the two related?’ We’re definitely going to address that. I think with our show…at least we try. We may not always hit the bulls-eye, but I think we try just to surprise the audience a little bit. Things could change.

TVF: McGarrett’s journey this season, is there still more stuff with his mom (Christine Lahti)?PL: I think McGarrett’s going to learn some new discoveries with his mom and I think clearly there’s not a lot of trust there in the relationship. I think we’re going to explore that a little bit. We’re going to get to meet Carol Burnett, who plays his aunt. In the mythology of the show, when the mother supposedly died, Mary was sent to go live with an aunt in LA so Carol Burnett’s going to be that aunt. She comes back at Thanksgiving and we get to meet her and it’s really a very, very heartwarming episode.

TVF: Is that making him (Chin Ho) a little lighter now that he’s got that in his life? He’s had some bad knocks there.PL: Yeah, but I think there’s an interesting episode that’s coming up where it’s really…there’s a lot of time with him being grilled by Internal Affairs. We’re going to learn a lot more about his backstory. We thought we knew everything. We thought we knew why he lost his badge but there’s going to be a lot more that’s going to come out and a very big, surprising twist in this flashback episode where you find out about his relationship with Malia and you’re going to learn about his father, Chin Ho’s father and about being mentored by McGarrett’s father so there’s a lot of good stuff in that episode for him.

TVF: How long before Kono gets back to the family because it looks like she’s going to be off on her own story for awhile.

PL: She’s got a real, solid story with Adam (Ian Anthony Dale) and being on the run and by the time she comes back and is a full member of Five-0, it’s probably mid-way through the season. We really want to do this arc and make it feel real. It’s not that simple actually, what they go through, but it’s fun. It’s really fun and I think for an actor to be able to do that kind of stuff, to be able to do not just the case of the week, but to be able to have this runner of half a season arc, I think she’s really excited. Also, we are as writers, but she’s very excited.

Up Next on Hawaii Five-0 – “A’ ale Ma’a Wau”

October 2nd, 2013 by

Looks like McGarrett is going to have his hands full this week. Not only will he be helping Tim Daly’s character find his missing daughter, but Catherine’s ex, Billy Harrington, will make an appearance in this episode. Perhaps we will get to see how McGarrett reacts to Catherine reconnecting with her past love.

I’d like to see Billy make a play for Catherine. With McGarrett’s good looks and charm, he has gotten away with taking advantage of Catherine and her Navy contacts for too long. It would be a nice change to see him have to fight for her affection.

Hawaii Five-0’s top guys answer eight burning questions

September 27th, 2013 by

Alex O'Loughlin and Chi McBride have a stare-down

McGarrett (Alex O’Loughlin) and SWAT Captain Lou Grover (Chi McBride) get off to a rocky start in the season 4 premiere.

Fans of Hawaii Five-0 have been speculating for months, and with the Season 4 premiere just a few hours away, TV Guide’s Liz Raftery is getting us some answers from Peter Lenkov and Alex O’Loughlin.

Hawaii Five-0 Boss: “McGarrett Is at the Tipping Point”
Sep 27, 2013 12:13 AM ET
by Liz Raftery

Hawaii Five-0 doesn’t waste any time getting into high gear when it kicks off its fourth season in a new timeslot this Friday (9/8c, CBS). There’s no daring underwater prison break like in the Season 3 premiere, but the episode still manages to set in motion events whose ripple effects will be felt throughout the season. And not all of the major players make it out of the premiere unscathed. Will Steve McGarrett (Alex O’Loughlin) finally get the answers he’s looking for from Wo Fat (Mark Dacascos)? Will Kono (Grace Park) be brought back into the fold? And who, or what, poses the biggest threat to the team this season?

TVGuide.com turned to O’Loughlin and executive producer Peter Lenkov to get answers to eight burning questions ahead of Season 4:

The season premiere kicks off with McGarrett helping Wo Fat escape, and then the fallout that ensues is fairly disastrous. What’s his motivation for doing that?
O’Loughlin:
He wants answers about his mother. And as far as he’s concerned his mother’s been dead for 20 years. There’s something going on with Wo Fat and Doris McGarrett (Christine Lahti) and he can’t get to the bottom of it, and so he goes to see him and we know what happens. … For McGarrett now, in a way, if he just let Wo Fat get killed, it’d be a sort of thorn out of his side, and it would be something he doesn’t have to worry about anymore. But there’s so many unanswered questions. There’s still unanswered questions about his father. He doesn’t feel comfortable with the excuse that he got. There’s still things that don’t add up. There’s still things that need to be answered for. He truly believes that Wo Fat has information that he’s not giving over that can give him answers about his own life and his own existence and his own parents. And I think that until he gets those answers, he’s going to move in and out of existential crisis forever. And so, on a personal level, I don’t think he’s going to let anything happen to Wo Fat.

Will McGarrett finally get answers about his mother’s relationship to Wo Fat? And will he be satisfied (when?) he does?
Lenkov:
McGarrett is at the tipping point with Doris and the secrets of her past. With her unwillingness to give him the answers he needs, McGarrett is going to have to take matters into his own hands. As the season unfolds, McGarrett is going to get some of those answers. … But this road to uncovering the truth about his relationship to Wo Fat and how it all relates to his mother, Doris, has been long — he still has some miles to go before getting there.
O’Loughlin: The great sort of quandary for him is that he can’t get past why Doris would have let Wo Fat escape that night back in the third season, in the house. It’s not beyond imagination that they could be half-brothers. That’s kind of eating him up. He’s obsessed. … He’s so driven by this. If he thinks he can get an answer about something that can help solve some of that stuff and help fill some of the black holes that kind of leave him feeling so empty every day, he’s going to do it no matter what.

Will Doris be back this season? Should McGarrett trust her?
Lenkov:
We will hopefully see Doris again this season, but I can’t yet reveal exactly how.  When McGarrett and Doris meet again, he’ll be much closer to the truth — and it will be a truth she can no longer deny.
O’Loughlin:
I don’t think he can trust her at all. And imagine your own mother looking you in the eye and not believing anything she said. I mean, it would be the most devastating feeling. And I think in those moments when he puts her on the ship and she goes on the slow boat to China and there’s a moment there where he looks at her and he’s so torn. It’s like, I want to believe what you’re saying. I want to support you. I want to make you listen to me. But I’m kind of powerless, and my gut is telling me not to believe anything. So it’s a very tortured predicament for anybody. But I don’t really think he can believe anything she says.

Catherine (Michelle Borth) finds herself in a sticky situation in the premiere. How does her relationship with McGarrett evolve over the course of this season?
Lenkov:
McGarrett and Catherine’s relationship will been faced with many challenges at the top of the season. Big changes are coming, and that can’t help but affect their relationship.  I think anyone McGarrett cares about unfortunately could be a liability to him. He’d sacrifice himself in a moment for someone he cares about.  There may not be anyone he cares for as much as Catherine.
O’Loughlin: Catherine Rollins is becoming more of a prominent member on the team. We’re really feeling her presence, and she’s evidently important to McGarrett. He’s growing more and more fond of her and they’re more and more comfortable with each other. It’s essentially a long-term relationship now. … Every episode, the relationship is progressing. It’s not necessarily progressing towards marriage and kids, but it’s progressing. The more time we spend with each other, the more important we become to each other. The more important she becomes to him. We see what sort of a priority she is to him in this episode. But what is your relationship worth? Is what you’re getting out of the relationship worth the toll that it’s taking? How much of a liability is she going to be to McGarrett? Kono’s like a sister. It’s a very different situation. But Catherine Rollins becoming more involved with Five-0 on a procedural level, that’s dangerous ground.

In the premiere, McGarrett immediately gets off to a rocky start with Capt. Grover (new cast member Chi McBride). Tell us about the new character. What’s his relationship with McGarrett like?
Lenkov:
McGarrett’s actions [in the premiere] will have consequences. Few people would take well to your colleague turning a gun on you your first day. A bad first impression is always hard to overcome, but when it’s holding someone at gunpoint? Nearly impossible.  We will learn very quickly Grover isn’t impressed by McGarrett’s methods or his so-called “immunity and means.” However, with Grover as our new head of SWAT and McGarrett head of Five-0, these two will never be apart for long. Over the season, we’ll see if these two can learn to trust each other and work together.
O’Loughlin: He’s kind of a badass. He comes in, he’s the new head of the SWAT team. I use him and his resources. I break the law, and he’s not going to stand for that s—. There’s no way. It’s a fiery, combative relationship. … But it’s good. My suspicion is that these characters are going to have more in common than they think, or that they’d like to think and that we would expect. But they’re both strong, they’re both leaders, they’re both alpha. They’re both pigheaded. So I think it’s going to be a very interesting relationship.

What sort of challenges will Danny (Scott Caan) face this season?
Lenkov:
We’ll get to see a bit more into Danny’s family this season when his mother (to be played by Melanie Griffith) comes to visit, perhaps revealing some deeper reasons for why he is the way he is.  Danny’s also finally adjusted into his joint custody of his daughter, Grace, but it makes him realize that any serious romantic relationships he has (including Gabby) no longer just affect him. He has to realize how they might affect Grace as well. It gives him and Gabby some tough choices to make.

What is Chin Ho’s (Daniel Dae Kim) journey this year?
Lenkov:
This season, we get to see Chin finally having just picked up the pieces after the loss of his wife Malia last season, trying to make a slow go of it with Leilani, the nurse he survived his prison break with. We’ll also get a chance to revisit some of Chin’s early days in his police career and see that sometimes, the choices that we make, even for the right reasons, can have unintended consequences. At his core, Chin Ho’s always had a powerful connection to his family. He ruined his reputation and got kicked off the force just to protect his uncle. While the whole team feels Kono’s absence, it hits Chin the hardest. His drive at the top of the season is to make it safe for her and Adam to return.

How will Kono remain connected to the story since she’s overseas?
Lenkov:
Kono will have her own circumstances to deal with while overseas, but she is an essential part of our team. We’ll being keep tabs on her abroad. Unfortunately, the danger to Kono and Adam (Ian Anthony Dale) in Hawaii is still very real, so returning is not an option. However, it appears that “danger” is coming for them now and no place may be safe. They’ll be forced to choose their fate — fight or flight.

What will McGarrett and Danny’s relationship be like in Season 4?
O’Loughlin:
They’re doing pretty good. Danny doesn’t have any major qualms at the moment. I think he’s pretty settled and pretty okay. He’s not itching to get out of there too badly at the moment. There’s not too much drama with Grace. There’s always one of us shrouded in drama, and the other one’s there kind of backing the other one up. But we’ll always quibble. Wouldn’t be McDano if we didn’t.
